Broncos standout named to all-scholastic team PDF Print E-mail

Over the past few months, Brian Murray has been lauded with no shortage of awards. After a phenomenal season on the field, Bronxville’s standout tailback has been named to both the All-Section and All-State teams, and was also voted the Most Outstanding Back in Class C, just to name a few accolades.

On Thursday night, he was the recipient of yet another high honor at a banquet held at the Westchester Country Club. Instead of simply recognizing his athletic achievements, this one was a testament to his all around contributions as a human being.

Murray and 11 other Section I footballers were honored at the 37th annual Golden Dozen awards at Westchester Country Club last week, recognized for not only their athletic prowess, but their academic achievements and positive standings in the community.

“On-field awards are great,” says the Broncos’ senior. “But in the end, they’re only football.”

On the gridiron, Murray’s exploits have been well documented. He ran for 1,665 yards and 21 touchdowns this year as Bronxville experienced one of its best seasons ever, plowing through Section I competition. But even as his team steamed towards the Syracuse Carrier Dome, Murray was mindful to keep focus on his studies—though he readily admits that it took a good amount of willpower to do so.

“It definitely wasn’t easy,” says Murray. “It was kind of tough to come home from practice at seven o’clock then have to do an essay for English class…especially after winning a game that was going to send your team to the state championship.”

Somehow, Murray also finds time to be an active community servant. He is a member of the Bronxville Youth Council and an active participant in Habitat for Humanity. Murray has been on several builds in the past few years and even devoted his time to travel down to New Orleans to rebuild houses in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
“My parents always encouraged me to get involved [with charity],” says Murray. “And I also followed in the footsteps of my brother Chris [who was named to the Golden Dozen team two years ago].”

Murray’s post-high school plans may also carry him in the direction of his brother, who plays football for Cornell. He is currently speaking with Ivy-League football coaches in the hopes of continuing his bright football and academic career after college.

But despite all the accolades, Murray is quick to point out that his achievements would not have been possible without a strong starting cast—from  his parents and brother to his Bronco teammates.

“I did have a lot of help,” he says. “Our offensive line was the best in Class C and probably matched up with any in Section I. I had a great fullback in Hart Mechlin blocking for me and two great receivers in the Karol brothers. I think everyone on that team had a commitment to winning and showed what can be accomplished through hard work and determination.”
